American Farmland Trust

The Carbon Reduction Potential Evaluation Tool™, or CaRPE Tool, is a web-based interactive tool that allows users to quickly visualize and quantify greenhouse gas emission reductions resulting from the implementation of a suite of cropland and grazing land conservation management practices.

The CaRPE tool expands the utility of the data reported by COMET-Planner by layering cropland and grazing land acres data from the 2017 Census of Agriculture. The tool provides a mechanism to quickly compare practices, their estimated costs, and where the greatest impact can be achieved across a state or region. The tool’s data and maps help policymakers and land managers prioritize efforts for cost-effective and optimal climate benefits from agricultural management.

Land Stewardship Project (LSP)

The Land Stewardship Project’s Bridge to Soil Health initiative works with crop and livestock farmers and other professionals who view soil as a long-term investment. LSP acts as a bridge between emerging soil health information and local farming practices, thereby uniting a community of farmers as the Soil Builders’ Network. The Land Stewardship Project invites crop and livestock farmers to join the southeastern Minnesota-based Soil Builders’ Network to get regular updates on workshops, field days, and on-farm demonstrations, as well as soil health and cover crop research.

When thinking about switching to a different farming system, one of the first questions many farmers want answered is: “How will this work financially?”. The Land Stewardship Project’s Chippewa 10% Project developed the Cropping Systems Calculator to help answer this question by allowing farmers to weigh the financial pros and cons of various planting and grazing scenarios.

U.S. Department of Agriculture National Resource Conservation Service (USDA NRCS) Organic Agriculture

NRCS offers voluntary programs to eligible landowners and agricultural producers to provide financial and technical assistance to help manage natural resources in a sustainable manner. Through these programs, the agency approves contracts to provide financial assistance in planning and implementing conservation practices that address natural resource concerns or opportunities to help save energy, improve soil, water, plant, air, animal, and related resources on agricultural lands and non-industrial private forest land.

If you are an organic producer or are transitioning to organic, NRCS can help you develop a conservation plan to meet your goals and can often help with financial assistance to implement elements of the plan. Click here to find more NRCS resources for Organic producers.
